Pom Thanakorn on The Way of Custom Old School Chopper

Custom Old School Choppers

Old School Chopper

Every time I hear someone says ‘the way of biker,’ I’m somehow always reminded of Sakrin Daorai, late comedian known and loved for his many villain roles. The phrase has recently been adopted by Pom Thanakorn, a friend I usually run into at race car events. A former Toyota Cressida drift driver, Pom has now shifted to iconic two-wheeler Harley-Davidson – customised to the max.

Let’s sit down with this legend, aka TK Lonewolf, and find out how and why he decided to join the custom chopper crew.

When ‘custom’ is ‘idenity’

“When I was still driving Toyota Cressida low-rider, I had it customised in the way that it pretty much represented my identity. I’d always a fan of two-wheelers but it wasn’t until the drifting track near Seacon got shut down that I had to find an alternative. I happened to have a relative working [with choppers] already I thought, why not?”

“He ran a shop called ‘Thor Chops and Kustoms,’ so he’s got a lot of experience and had a lot to teach me. I got started with this super old-school SR400. I was clueless at first, but the more I did my research on the internet, the more I realized how much loved cafe and bobber styles. I wanted my chopper to look like those.”

Settling on Old-school Chopper
“I was still riding my SR while studying up on choppers and their many subcategories. It took me a while to settle on the styles that I like and begin from there. My relative was always there pointing me to the right direction. Once I’d settled on the old-school Frisco Chopper, I knew that it’d to be Harley and nothing else. That’s how I got my 1986 4-gear Sportster 1200.”

“It was in a really bad state when I got it. The frame wasn’t like this – every part had to be replaced. That’s just how you do custom. Even though you buy the whole thing, what you end up keeping are usually the engine and the license plate. It took me about 2 years to finish the whole customization process.”

“It’s up to you how much you want to add to your ride. The most important thing here is a collaboration between you and the mechanic. If you can’t properly communicate to your mechanic what you have in mind, then it’s going to be a challenge.”

What makes custom stand out from other choppers?

“Custom is all about personal preferences so you can’t really say, ‘Oh, this one looks nice’ or ‘That one ain’t pretty.’ It really is a matter of taste.”

Can you tell us about your ride? What makes it special?

“I think it’s the details that go into it. Most motorbikes don’t really need all these parts and features, but it’s my intention to make it look like it does now.”

“As for the engines, they don’t need that much tinkering with. The real charm of Harley Davidson is the noise its engine makes. For cables and stuff like that, they’re neatly hidden under the hood.”

“I like that they’re timeless. I like how classic they still look regardless of time and era. This ride has so much of me in it – there’s only one of its kind.”

What advice do you have for those who want to get into custom choppers?
”Start thinking what style you like and all the details that come with it. How high or how low do you want the handlebars to go? The engine doesn’t even need to be Harley’s as long as you know exactly what you want and all the rest of the details will follow. The possibilities are endless when it comes to custom. And unless you’re planning to enter your ride in a contest, you don’t need to please anybody.”

“Also, don’t rush the process. At the end of the day, you’re the rider so if something doesn’t feel right, take your time and adjust it accordingly. Does it represent your style when it’s parked? What about when you’re riding it?”
