Dating apps: the Answer to Modern-day Romance?

Beauty Standards

When dating apps first came into Thailand more than ten years ago, they were regarded as either strange, untrustworthy or even scary due to cases of catfishing or frauds portrayed by the news. But, as time passes, we have become more accepting and trusting of technological advances. Driven by the pandemic, an increasing number of people look to dating apps to fulfill their relationship needs. Is this the ‘new normal’ of modern romance? EQ chat with 5 members of Gen Y to find out.

“I feel like we’ve become more private…”

Arisa tells us the reason why she decided to get on Tinder.

“Things are different now. Back in the days, it was a lot easier to find love. If you liked someone, you could just walk up to them and ask for their number. I feel like we’ve become more private in that aspect. People don’t feel safe when you ask them for their Line or strike up a conversation with them randomly. I certainly feel that way and it’s a bit of a turn-off for me. With Tinder, though, I feel more at ease because I can swipe left or right and get to know people at my own pace.”

She further adds that she actually met her current boyfriend through the app and that she’s not ashamed of it. “I’m proud to tell people [that we met on Tinder]. While dating apps and dating in real life are not that much different, with the app, you can just unmatch the ones you don’t feel are a right fit for you. I believe that, eventually, you’ll find someone who’s looking for the same thing as you.”

“Also with the restrictions and everything, we’re spending a lot of time on the internet. It’s natural for people to want to find companions or relationships. That’s why dating apps are getting more popular.”

Looking for dates while expanding social circles

For a Twitter user who goes by the name Milktea, she tells us that the reason she decided to get on ‘Coffee Meets Bagel’ is because she wanted to look for guys outside of her work circle. What sets this particular app apart from others is its features which encourage meaningful connections that go beyond pictures. Users can add details such as religions, interests and careers. What’s more, the number of profiles users can interact with each day is limited to 10 people per day and they have 30 days to interact with your matches before the conversations expire.

“I prefer dating apps because they let me expand my social circles and allow me to meet new people who share the same interests. It’s already hard enough to meet people when you live outside of Bangkok. But with COVID-19, we’re also stuck inside and spending a lot of time online. Actually, many of my friends have shifted to dating apps.”

Shy people’s little helper

For those who are a little on the shy side, dating apps can be a blessing. Sanook, a 4th year university student, agrees. “I’m rather shy and I’m scared of making that first move. My life revolves around my dorm, university and my group of friends so dating apps like Tinder really come in handy for me. It helps people like me expand our horizons.”

“Many people I know are on this app and some of them even found their boyfriends through it. I think people have become a little more open-minded when it comes to dating apps and technological advancements. Also with COVID-19, we became even more isolated than before. I wish, though, that they would introduce a video call function [on the app] so that we don’t need to exchange our socials. That way, if things don’t go as planned, it’s a lot less awkward to unmatch with people.”

Defying beauty Standards

N, a woman in her early 30s who married someone she met on Tinder, admits to us that she found it hard to make the first move because she was not confident in her looks.

“I don’t fit the beauty standards so there weren't a whole lot of guys who would approach me. The app really helped me out because at least I could use filters in my photos,” she says with a laugh. “My friends who are also in their 30s are also quite open minded about dating apps. One of them is actually dating a foreign guy she met on Tinder after I told her about my own experience with the app. I think that’s the way things will continue to unfold in the future.”

“When you’re working full-time, you don’t really have time for romance or dates. These apps can fulfill that gap for you as long as you’re open to them. Even if you don’t end up with a ‘fan,’ you’ll get to know and make friends with people who you wouldn’t otherwise have a chance to meet in real life.”

Making the connections

Another Twitter user (@YipeeTweet) tells us that she, too, likes the way Coffee Meets Bagel positions itself as more than just an app for hooking up.

“I feel that the users on there are more serious about getting to know other people. They’re open to something more long-term,” she explains. “I met my current partner on the app and we’ve been going out for about a year now. We’re actually looking at planning our future together.”

“Virtually everyone I know met their current partner through a dating app during this ‘new normal’ era. People have definitely embraced this new way of dating. I think dating apps should be normalized because they really allow people to get to know one another, especially in the pandemic, before they can take it further. The most important thing, in the end, is how we make real-life connections.”
