The word “spirituality” often gets tossed around by Gen Z, particularly in this (supposed) post-COVID era. Perhaps not surprising, though, since there has already been a hype surrounding moo tae lu, an umbrella term that includes astrology, fortune telling and superstitions, among the new generation long before the pandemic.

But what do members of Gen Z really think of when they hear the word “spirituality”? EQ have a chat with Cine, Nop and Euro to find out.

When we first saw Cine’s artworks, we were struck by their powerful message associated with the power of nature and spirituality.

“Spirituality, to me, is the essence of something, but not the whole thing. To put it simply, it’s like an aura,” she explains. “I think human beings can reach that level [of spirituality] through our learning and environment. The more we’re immersed in something, the more we’re able to access it. There’s spirituality in everything whether it’s nature or culture. To give you an example, when someone who’s really passionate about trees learns more about trees, they become fully absorbed in that knowledge. They gain a deep understanding of plants that goes beyond five senses. They’re aware of their emotions and inner workings. It’s as if they were able to communicate with them.”

When asked if she thinks art and spirituality are connected, she agrees. “I think they are directly connected. Art is a kind of obsession. It could be about something personal, society, sex or a search for an answer – everybody is different. This obsession brings about repeated actions and we keep learning more and more until we reach a level of profundity where it can be expressed through art.”

“Spirituality never really disappears. It’s just that all these rituals change with time. Back in the days when people used to settle by the river, their lives were deeply connected with that body of water. That’s why we have myths, beliefs and rituals surrounding naga. Today, rituals might take the form of  short films or social media posts. The scale might be more contained, but it’s also gotten more diverse.”

Freelance actor and fashion photographer behind the ‘Joy Despret’ collection Nop shares similar views with Cine.

“When I think of spirituality, I think of things that can’t be touched, but can be felt. I’m a visualizer and I see it as this multicolored smoke floating in the atmosphere around us (laughs). I believe that spirituality and art are connected because art was essentially born out of human’s spirituality. To be able to connect to it is just a matter of when.”

She further adds that roughly half of her Gen Z friends believe in spirituality.

“From what I saw, it’s about half, half. For those who subscribe to it, they said that things like tarot cards are mostly for emotional support. Then there are skeptics who refuse to believe in anything unscientific. For me personally, I indulge in a bit of fortune telling only because I love hearing positive things from my readings. They give me clarity, guidance and encouragement.”

Last but not least, we have Euro, a university student who was part of the Swapshop’s recent #blackerthanfuture campaign.

“I do agree that there’s a connection between art and spirituality. It takes spirituality to be able to appreciate art and understand the artists’ message. But because we’re getting too absorbed in social media, I think our spirituality will soon decline and we’ll forget that everything surrounding us can be expanded.”

It seems like Cine, Nop and Euro’s definition of “spirituality” goes hand in hand with Carl Jung’s understanding of “spirit” which represents “an object of psychic experience which cannot be proved to exist in the external world and cannot be understood rationally.”

Thanks to various online communities and the rise of moo tae lu, the young generation feel more open to discuss the topic of spirituality and embrace it on their own terms.
