Pride Month is all about celebrating personal achievements and embracing self-worth, regardless of gender. However, even within the LGBTQ+ community, there can be certain gender norms and standards that make some people feel excluded. That’s where Jimmy comes in – the creative mind behind the Facebook page called Jim's Journey. This page serves as a safe space for transgender men who don’t quite fit into the traditional gender mold to share their experiences. Their goal is to support and encourage people of all genders to be comfortable in their own skin, without feeling the need to conform to societal expectations.
Before the term “transgender men” came into common usage, Thailand commonly used the term “tom” to describe this group of individuals. However, the voice of transgender men in Thailand is not as prominent as other voices within the LGBTQ+ community. Transmasculine individuals also face a unique set of gender expectations. Today, we chat with Jimmy about his experiences and his decision to create a platform where he could share his personal journey.
“We didn’t use to have the term ‘transgender men,’ you know? People would just refer to us collectively as ‘tom.’ But then, one day, I decided to start a page to share my life’s journey. What I found was that I didn’t fit the standard image of a transgender man. I’m a guy with a strong feminine side, which doesn’t match up with the society’s preconceived notions of what a transgender man should be. You know, the whole handsome, muscular, macho stereotype that society expects from guys? Well, that’s not really me.”
“I want to people to realize that men with a feminine side are still men. Being a man doesn’t always have to conform to set standards.”
“Pride in embracing my identity as a transgender man is about being a man who doesn’t conform to traditional norms. This understanding has shown me that those who feel they don’t fit in and stand apart from others also need a safe space. One of the sources of pride in sharing my journey is that people have reached out seeking advice on hormone therapy to transition into being a man.”
“This one person told me that he was considering starting hormone therapy for his transition, but he was worried that the doctor might not let him. So, I asked him why he was feeling that way, and with a sad look, he opened up about having feelings for guys. I comforted him by saying that our journey is our own, and our sexual orientation doesn’t define our identity. I realized that being there as a support can help people feel more confident in themselves. It also reinforced my pride in embracing my own authenticity.”
The journey of embracing diversity in Thailand has made significant strides. Nowadays, individuals within the LGBTQ+ community have numerous platforms to share their stories, amplify their voices, and advocate for increased gender equality. However, authentic acceptance and comprehensive legal rights for the expansive spectrum of gender identities are areas that still require further progress.
What do you believe could contribute to fostering greater acceptance of diversity in Thailand?
“We need to listen to each other and accept one another. We have to acknowledge that everyone in society is different in one way or another. To increase diversity in society, it starts with accepting that we’re all unique. It's something very ordinary, really – just like the diversity of gender. No matter how one identifies their gender, my underlying belief has always been that every person is equally human.”
This resounding call for support underscores a fundamental principle – that achieving a more diverse and gender-equal society begins with recognizing our individual differences. By embracing and genuinely listening to these varied perspectives, the symphony of diversity can gradually find its resonance in Thai society. With a louder collective voice, the ongoing fight for gender equality will move closer to the sought-after finish line of inclusivity. It is imperative that we stand together in support, much like the journey undertaken by Jim, who, as a transgender man, has exemplified the power of unity and advocacy for a more accepting future.
