EQ Sound Of Youth EP3: Gen-Z and The Rise of Mu-Te-Lu

Taken from the title of an old Indonesian movie of the same name, the word ‘Mu-te-lu’ was initially adopted by the Thai queer community to refer to a broad spectrum of superstition, spanning New Age-y beliefs, rituals, spirituality, and a lifestyle as a whole. Today, the way of mu-te-lu has well and truly spread outside of the LGBTQ+ circle and seems to have struck a chord with the general public, particularly members of Gen-Z. Why is that so? Let’s find out from these three youngsters.

What do you guys believe in?

Mungkamon, 21, illustrator/model
“I believe in all sorts of fantasy. I like to create artwork based on my imagination and what I daydream about.”

Emma Mathilde Duhard, 21, Digital Art student at Rangsit University, owner of and tattoo artist at @le.17.avril
“I believe that everything is one and one is everything. It’s like one big circle of the universe, made up of smaller ones hidden in the smallest atom that’s also the biggest. We’re all one and the same.”

Muang, 24, 4th-year university student, freelance art teacher, fortune-teller, bar staff
“I believe in myself. I love and put myself before anything else. The only person who can grant me the most fabulous wish is myself.”

Why do you think more and more Gen Zers are adopting the way of mu-te-lu?
Mungkamon: “I think it’s because of the society and the kind of political environment we live in. We can’t trust and rely on our current government so we’re turning to mu-te-lu for emotional support when it comes to money, work, or relationships. We seek emotional comfort.

Emma: “As time changes, being smart and hard-working is no longer a guarantee that you’ll reach your goals or succeed in life. What’s equally important is timing and being in the right place at the right time. In the increasingly capitalistic world that we’re living in, it’s important to have some sort of spiritual anchor. Maybe that’s the reason why the young generation is becoming more interested in mu-te-lu.

Muang: “In Thailand, I don’t feel like religion is able to provide the answer that most people are looking for. Religious teachings focus too much on black and white and that concept doesn’t belong in the context of modern Thai society. With all these incidents and scandals with monks and the political situation that only seems to be getting worse, we can’t help but feel hopeless. These past few years, I’ve seen a lot of mu-te-lu-related posts on social media whether it’s places of worship, new kinds of charm or talismans. We all need something to put our faith in because this country is not doing well, both economically and politically.”

Have you experienced anything supernatural or mu-te-lu?
”Many times! I think it’s because I’m a very fanciful person. One time, I was told that I would receive support from a middle-aged woman and that turned out to be true. I was also told by this fortune teller that I would have a lot of work coming in, but not so much in the way of income. That was right on the money! A lot of relationship stuff was accurate as well. Actually, I prefer not to hear my love fortune because I tend to get carried away.”

Can you tell us about manifesting?
“A friend of mine introduced me to manifesting which is the practice of thinking aspirational thoughts with the purpose of making them come true. I didn’t really believe it at first, but I gave it a try anyway. I manifested for my crush to text me. I did it three times and he texted me every time! Looks like he’s about to ask me out on a date too! (screams). Given the state of our country right now, at least there’s something for me to look forward to (laughs).”

Emma: “Well, it’s not exactly mu, but it was something that really made me think. I was in my bed listening to ‘Time Adventure’ which is the soundtrack to this animation called Adventure Time. As I was listening to it, I got up and my dress ripped. My first reaction was upset, but then I heard the song’s hook that goes ‘Will happen, happing, happened, and we will happen again and again, ‘cause you and I will always be back then.’ Then I started to cry, but not because I was sad, more like the realization that the dress was bound to rip one day whether I like it or not. Nothing is permanent. Life is that simple, why should we complicate things? It’s one of the most unforgettable moments of my life.”

What do you think about mu-te-lu?
Mungkamon: “I think it’s really interesting. It’s like this fantasy that gives people who believe in it some peace of mind. It helps guide you in the right direction. And if you don’t feel at ease with it, you just let it go.”

Emma: “These things have existed alongside humans forever, especially here in Thailand. We want to know the answers to why we were born and where we go when we die. Religious beliefs and faiths are our way of justifying our existence and what we don’t know.”

Muang: “I think it’s normal. There’s always been mu-te-lu in Thai society which has existed in many different forms and is used by people of walks of life from the elite to the marginalized. It’s just that recently it’s been incorporated into our daily lives in new ways. In ancient Thailand, ladies of the court would wear certain colors on certain days for good luck. Old- school talismans have been updated and decked out with colored stones in a chic way so they’re no longer intimidating and more approachable. I think it depends on an individual how much they believe in these things.”
