The mention of “slow life” often conjures the fresh aroma of freshly brewed coffee and the serene ambiance of a quiet morning. Sitting down leisurely, savoring a cup of coffee, it brings to mind the simplicity of life — a perfect start to a day that’s free from worries.
If you’ve had the chance to stroll down Pradipat road, you’re likely no stranger to its lively atmosphere. Yet, as you approach the far end of Soi Pridi 25, a different world unfolds. Step into PRIDI, a pristine white house adorned with a wooden door, elegantly marked by a red sign, and take in the alluring aroma of freshly roasted coffee and its cozy atmosphere.
Decked out in a minimalist style, the interior is complemented by large, extended windows that draw the gaze towards the lush green garden at the back of the house. As you sit and enjoy your coffee, while admiring the outdoor garden, the notion of “slow life” gently settles into your mind, like a trusty companion. กนต์ธร “M” นิโลดม, one of PRIDI’s four founders, shares with us the story behind this inviting cafe.
How did PRIDI come about?
“Initially, we just wanted to find a new location for our old coffee roastery. We were looking around in the Thonglor-Ekkamai area and it just so happened that someone we knew was renting out this old house in the area. Although the house is quite old, its structure and the garden at the back retained their charm. We even converted part of the garage into the roastery. Toeyting, one of the founders, had this idea of combining a roastery with a bakery, and that’s how PRIDI was born.”
What’s the concept of PRIDI?
“We didn’t really have any concept to begin with. It was simply about creating things we want to eat, without compromising on quality and price. Just like everything else we do, we don’t follow trends. We produce things that are of good quality and familiar to us.”
Who are your customers?
“Our customers are quit diverse. There’re those who come to take photos, some who enjoy food, and others who are coffee enthusiasts. As for us, we’re pretty laid-back and don’t really think about what kind of person should come and sit in our shop.”
Can you tell us about your menu?
“We use high-quality ingredients. Our menu is somewhat limited because some things are sourced seasonally and the fact that we’re a small team. We’re doing okay right now, but we might consider expanding in the future.”
Must-try Menu Items
Chicken Confit
Made from free-range chicken, this dish features tender, crispy skin from slow-cooked and confit chicken, paired with buttery beans and drizzled with caramelized apple sauce.
Fish and Butter
Taste the simple elegance of fried grouper, coated in a velvety blend of butter and ponzu sauce, and topped with sautéed mushrooms. Every component blends in perfect harmony. Nothing is lacking, and nothing is excessive.
Lots of Tomato
Crafted from two types of tomatoes, the dish features a dressing made from lacto-fermented tomato water, combined with 2-3 additional house-made sauces, and topped with a sprinkle of coriander leaves. Not to be missed for tomato fans!
Endive and Preserved Nutmeg
Endive is a type of leafy vegetable, similar to kale but with subtle bitterness. Here, it’s served with the accompanying fresh and zesty dressing, along with a touch of nutmeg.
What kind of coffee do you offer?
“Our coffee is all single origin. For espresso, we offer only two options because we sort of want to guide our customers towards these choices. Our roasted coffee is also on the lighter side. When it comes to hand drip and filter coffee, the customer has the flexibility to choose their beans. Our menu keeps evolving over time.”
Whether you’re enjoying a quiet morning, catching up with friends, or just taking some time for yourself, PRIDI is there with open arms, ready to remind you that slowing down can be magical. What are you waiting for? Soak up the beauty of the garden, relish life’s simple pleasures, and leave with a renewed energy to dive back into the city’s hustle and bustle.
